Improving Personal Effectiveness
One of the keys to improving personal effectiveness is to flex your style to communicate better with opposite styles. To "flex your style" means to temporarily change your style so that others can relate to and communicate better with you.
The program consists of a series of scales which describe how you can "flex your style" to communicate more effectively with people who have opposite styles.
An example of a scale follows:
For an INDIRECT to better communicate with a DIRECT

Be more assertive and forceful when presenting ideas ![]()
Demonstrate self-assurance through posture and voice tone

Stand your ground when a DIRECT challenges you ![]()
Avoid appearing unsure, hesitant, or tentative ![]()
Rehearse your opinions; even jot down some thoughts so you won't omit them in a discussion with a DIRECT
For a DIRECT to better communicate with an INDIRECT

Listen thoroughly first before debating or arguing ![]()
Watch your body language - avoid overpowering ![]()
Suggest and recommend; don't tell or command ![]()
Don't put down and INDIRECT's ideas - even if you are just joking

Avoid coming across too self-assured and too convicted; INDIRECTS may read this as arrogance
These scales will help you to develop strategies for improving your communication skills and working better with others.
This inventory can be used in a team building program, a communication skills program or as a counseling tool with identified individuals. It can also stand alone as a Conflict Management / Communications Module.
